Last May, as we prepared for the second Cape and Islands Suicide Awareness Walk in Orleans, the most recent figures of death by suicide on the Cape and Islands was 40 for all of 2017. This year, the figures released from Barnstable County for 2018 was 27—a substantial decrease! It is far too early to tell if the united efforts of Sharing Kindness, the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, and the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition are truly having a positive effect on this issue for Cape Cod. What we do know, is that breaking the isolation and stigma for people who suffer with depression and despair goes a long way to saving a life.
This year’s 3rd walk is Saturday, May 18th at 10am at Eldredge park in Orleans. Online registration is available online through the Sharing Kindness website at www.sharingkindness.org or directly at the secure walk website: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/capeandislands2019saw/
Please join us on May 18th for the 2019 Cape and Islands Suicide Awareness Walk in Orleans. Registration can either be done ahead of time online at sharingkindness.org or on the morning of the walk, beginning at 8 am. After an opening ceremony, the three-mile walk begins at 10am on the track at Eldredge Field. Between our available refreshments and the smooth sidewalk, people of all mobilities are welcome and encouraged to join us. After the walk, we will have a closing ceremony followed by a barbeque lunch that all may enjoy. Leashed pets are welcome. All proceeds will go to Sharing Kindness, the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, and the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition to help fund suicide prevention education and grief support.
