Defining Europe: Eurovision in the era of Brexit

Since its inception in 1956, the Eurovision Song Contest has been steeped in geopolitical controversies, even allowing Australia to enter in 2015. Beyond raising questions about identity, statehood, and national boundaries, can Eurovision offer us a new understanding of what it means to be 'in Europe'?

Our panel
Dr Catherine Baker is a specialist in post-Cold War history, international relations and cultural studies at the University of Hull. Her research projects are connected by an overarching interest in the politics of representing, narrating and knowing about the past. Catherine's current projects includes work on the cultural politics of international events such as the Eurovision Song Contest.

Chris West is the author of Eurovision! A History of Modern Europe Through the World's Greatest Song Contest. In his book, Chris charts both the history of Europe and the history of the Eurovision Song Contest over the last six decades, and shows how they interlink.

Evan Davis (chair) is the presenter of Radio 4's PM programme, presents the BBC business reality show Dragons Den, and the business conversation programme the Bottom Line.
