Making its debut at St. Paul's church in Winchester, Orbit, a new contemporary jazz group, is the brainchild of veteran pianist Robert Carter. Their repertoire is not the usual jazz fare, and is an amalgam of influences from around the world - medieval Constantinople, Irish folk songs, reggae, music from Latin America and north Africa, all interwoven with the band's original compositions. The line-up is unusual too; apart from Carter's piano, there is Lewis Wood on violin, Patrick Naylor on guitar and Iqbal Pathan on tabla, all masters of their craft. Orbit's experimental yet highly accessible approach to jazz is guaranteed to delight and surprise.
