The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at MSU is partnering with the Belgrade Community Library to host a talk entitled "Bread, War and Memory" at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the library. This event is free and open to the public. The presentation will be preceded by a social with refreshments at 5:30 p.m.

Indian author Avijeet Das wrote, "We need four things to survive life: bread, water, oxygen and dreams!" Bread has been the staple food in many western cultures for thousands of years. In this talk, historian Mary Murphy will discuss the substance and memory of bread during war. When depriving people of bread becomes a weapon, procuring bread means survival, and dreaming of bread becomes a means of resistance.

Mary Murphy is an American historian who taught the courses "Food in America" and the "Global History of Food" at MSU and is writing a culinary history of Montana. In addition, she has served as director of the Ivan Doig Center for the Study of the Lands and Peoples of the American West. Murphy has won numerous prizes and fellowships for her research, teaching and mentoring.

Seating is limited at Belgrade Community Library events, and advance registration is encouraged to ensure you get a seat. However, walk-ins are always welcome. For more information or to register, please visit the OLLI at MSU website at www.montana.edu/olli/.

This collaborative community event is presented by OLLI at MSU and the Belgrade Community Library, with sponsorship by Martel Construction.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at MSU is a program of Academic Technology and Outreach (ATO) at Montana State University. ATO works across MSU to support and advance our land-grant mission through unique and innovative opportunities for outreach and engagement.
